How I Discovered ARUN (Toshiya Masuoka)

What led the members who support ARUN to discover the organization? In this series, we invite them to share their own stories in their own words, touching on the background of their encounter with ARUN and how it has shaped their lives.

This time, we present a message from Toshiya Masuoka, who supports ARUN’s activities from Washington, D.C., in the United States.　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　

My first encounter with ARUN was during its early days. While working at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector arm, I met ARUN’s Executive Director, Satoko Kono, at an event.

At the time, I had launched a department dedicated to promoting inclusive business and was focused on supporting local companies working to solve social issues in developing countries. Our team’s guiding principle was Gandhi’s saying: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” ARUN’s mission—to walk alongside social entrepreneurs and expand social investment—aligns perfectly with Gandhi’s words, and I felt reassured to meet like-minded colleagues.

After leaving the IFC, I realized I wanted to pursue things that were difficult to achieve within an international organization, which is often large, inflexible, and bound by many rules. I was drawn to ARUN’s meticulous and down-to-earth approach and became a member. I usually live in Washington, D.C., and due to the time difference, it’s difficult for me to participate regularly. However, every time I attend a meeting, I’m inspired by the enthusiasm of the pro bono members and interns who make time to participate despite their busy schedules, and I draw energy from them as well. I’ve also been impressed by the organization’s willingness to engage directly with entrepreneurs and investment opportunities, taking the necessary risks alongside them, as well as the high quality of our discussions. I truly enjoy the opportunity to exchange ideas with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and experiences, which allows me to gain new insights. It’s a wonderful place where I can work alongside many “Gandhis” from various generations, ranging from high school students to people my age.

Recently, I’ve been able to return to Japan for a few months each year, so I hope to contribute even more in the future. I’d also like to increase opportunities to interact with current members and those who will join us. In line with ARUN’s philosophy, I hope we can all work together to spread positive change in society, even if it’s only a little. Let’s be the change!
